I can only think of a single major forceful reason why I left employment and venture my own solo practice. Though uncertain of the future, I am certain about what I want. I want to practice my profession by dealing with real clients, advising them and representing their causes before courts and other adjudicatory or administrative bodies. I want real action in my profession. I want to be in the middle of actual legal controversy helping either or both sides. I am looking for actual cases, my own case. My employment in a corporation gave me a piece of work so that I compete with fellow employees for promotion. Inside a company, I am destined to join the race and be the first to reach the top. In such case I will be considered the winner. Had I chose to do so however, I would have forgotten about the real purpose of the dream I had. That was not the kind of lawyer work I envisioned when I decided to become a lawyer. I would have been continuously unfaithful to myself had I not decided to leave that kind of work. The job security I derived from my employment (though secured and the corporation that provides it is well established) does not give me peace of mind much less the satisfaction I want to feel as a lawyer. I was there surrounded by corporate men and women who are much willing to donate and fully make use all their knowledge and their energy during their useful years to their beloved company. The feeling of being a loser and idiot is sometimes unavoidable. Sometimes you may be unlucky enough to be under the supervision of a boss who knows nothing but to bash and outwit his/her fellow employees. The problem with being an employee in a corporation is sometimes you will be surrounded by a bunch of ass kissers who would laugh at the corny jokes of the chairman or the president to ensure their names are in the list during the next promotion. Fortunately, I haven’t felt this yet in my previous company. At least prior to my resignation. It could be that I did not find in that place my own concept or understanding of smart lawyering. In my new enterprise I believe that success and great future lies ahead.
